Recap by phillip woo
In the battle of superstars, champion Golden Sixty prevailed. He responded nicely to take control near the 100m ater pushing out for a clear run 250m out from the box seat for a 23rd win from 27 starts. He's a world-class miler. Favourite Romantic Warrior produced a grinding effort to just overhaul long-time leader California Spangle for second after getting put to the test rounding the final bend following a pace-stalking run. He lost nothing in defeat but is better over a longer trip. California Spangle led as expected and grudgingly gave way after turning the final bend a length on top. It was another brave effort in defeat. It was a long way back to Waikuku who just got the better of Beauty Joy after a prominent run. He did upset Golden Sixty last year but is getting long in the tooth. Beauty Joy couldn't turn it up another gear travelling midfield in the seven-horse field. He wasn't good enough. Both Russian Emperor and Panfield made their runs one-two at the back but couldn't make an impression late. They didn't get the pace to suit and are better suited over longer trips.
