Recap by phillip woo

All For St Paul's ran down post-time favourite Elite Patch in deep stretch for the win after handing up the lead to chase Ping Hai Treasure from the 1,200m. He made it four wins this season despite a rise in class and switch to the dirt. Elite Patch did everything but get the win after surging to the lead 250m out following a box-seat run. The weight swing of 10 pounds between him and the winner was likely the difference in the end. Tangmere ran on well from near last to fill a placing. He was in good form off a last-start win and did place three back over this same course and distance. Awe ran on steadily to fill the frame after a rails run worse than midfield following a tardy break. He rarely produces a bad run without threatening on a win line at this level but will be a force to be reckoned with shortly in Class Four. Party Everyday stayed on without menacing following a one-off run in midfield. He does appear from his past few starts to be on his mark. Early favourite Ping Hai Treasure knocked up 100m out after clearing to the lead 1,200m out from a wide gate. He's been surprisingly weak at the finish.

Racing Incident Report

Race Two: (547) - PARUS HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1800Meters

AWE shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of PARTERRE.

From wide barriers, VILLA FIONN and TANGMERE were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.

VILLA FIONN then raced wide and without cover from passing the winning post on the first occasion until the 1200 Metres.

Approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, PARTERRE travelled very keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.

After the 1300 Metres and again passing the 600 Metres, PARTY EVERYDAY got its head on the side and lay out.

R Maia (VILLA FIONN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of GREAT TREASURE, resulting in that horse having to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled.

R Maia was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Saturday, 17 April 2021 and to expire on Thursday, 22 April 2021 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).

Approaching the 500 Metres, ALL FOR ST PAUL'S raced tight outside ELITE PATCH which attempted to shift to the outside of PING HAI TREASURE.

Rounding the Home Turn, PARTERRE and TANGMERE raced tight as TANGMERE improved into running between PARTERRE and AWE which shifted out from behind ELITE PATCH.

The performances of PARTERRE and GREAT TREASURE, both of which finished tailed out, were considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, PARTERRE and GREAT TREASURE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of PARTERRE and GREAT TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

R Maia was reminded of his obligation in respect of the use of the whip on a horse out of contention.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PING HAI TREASURE, J Moreira stated that in accordance with his instructions he rode PING HAI TREASURE positively from the outside barrier to take up a forward position.

He said it was anticipated that ALL FOR ST PAUL'S would lead and that an opportunity would be available to PING HAI TREASURE to sit outside that horse.

He said after obtaining a position outside ALL FOR ST PAUL'S after passing the winning post on the first occasion, he attempted to steady PING HAI TREASURE to remain racing outside of ALL FOR ST PAUL'S, however, his mount would not relax and travelled too keenly.

He said passing the 1400 Metres he shifted PING HAI TREASURE out away from ALL FOR ST PAUL'S in the hope that this would assist his mount in relaxing, however, the horse continued to travel keenly.

He added he then elected to, rather than fight his mount, allow PING HAI TREASURE to stride forward into the lead passing the 1200 Metres.

He said whilst PING HAI TREASURE relaxed somewhat after obtaining the lead, the horse continued to travel strongly and he believed that this was the reason that PING HAI TREASURE did not quicken when asked passing the 400 Metres before giving ground over the concluding stages.

A veterinary inspection of PING HAI TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of VILLA FIONN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

ALL FOR ST PAUL'S and ELITE PATCH were sent for sampling.
