Racing Incident Report
Race Two: (269) - GRAHAM HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1200Meters
VALIANT ELEGANCE, which was declared to be wearing a parade hood, was unable to be fitted with that gear as the horse became extremely fractious, reared up and made contact with the stalls structure as endeavours were being made to apply this gear.
A subsequent examination of VALIANT ELEGANCE by the Veterinary Officer passed that horse suitable to race.
Permission was consequently granted for VALIANT ELEGANCE to parade without the declared gear.
PAKISTAN ZINDABAD, FLYING PHOTOS and FORTUNE HAPPINESS all began awkwardly.
MOMENTUM GALAXY also began awkwardly and shifted in, resulting in DIAMOND STAR being inconvenienced.
PHENOMENAL COMBO and TELECOM PUMA bumped heavily on jumping.
From a wide barrier, SMART CHARADE was shifted across behind runners soon after the start.
For some distance approaching and making the first turn, CARRY THE DIAMOND raced keenly when being restrained to shift in and obtain a position closer to the rail with cover.
Along the Back Straight, CARRY THE DIAMOND continued to race keenly and was unable to obtain cover until passing the 700 Metres.
Passing the 900 Metres, FORTUNE HAPPINESS got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of HAPPY PROFIT (Apprentice C L Chau) which shifted in.
Apprentice Chau was advised whilst the Stewards accepted that his mount was racing greenly due to its inexperience, nonetheless he should exercise more care when shifting ground.
Approaching the 600 Metres, MOMENTUM GALAXY was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of PHENOMENAL COMBO (M F Poon) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear.
M F Poon was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
When improving to the outside of VALIANT ELEGANCE passing the 200 Metres, CARRY THE DIAMOND shifted out abruptly away from that horse, resulting in COMPASSION STAR, which was giving ground, being severely hampered.
The Stewards were satisfied that this incident was due to the racing manners of CARRY THE DIAMOND and that its rider Z Purton had reacted immediately to correct the horse.
When questioned, M F Poon stated that, from a favourable barrier, he was asked to ride PHENOMENAL COMBO, which was having only its second race start tonight, in a relatively prominent positon.
He said he was obliged to ride his mount along for quite some time in the early stages in order to cross MOMENTUM GALAXY so as to avoid racing wide and without cover.
He said after shifting in to race outside COMPASSION STAR approaching the 600 Metres, PHENOMENAL COMBO travelled only fairly before coming under heavy pressure rounding the Home Turn.
He added, in his view, PHENOMENAL COMBO's failure to finish off the race was due to the amount of use he had to make of the horse in the early stages which would explain its disappointing performance.
A veterinary inspection of PHENOMENAL COMBO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea.
A veterinary inspection of COMPASSION STAR immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm.
Before being allowed to race again, COMPASSION STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
COMPASSION STAR, MOMENTUM GALAXY and TELECOM PUMA were sent for sampling.

Momentum Galaxy dashed well to take control 100m out after a well-executed ride one off better than midfield for a second win from five starts this term. He'll likely find things harder up in grade now. Telecom Puma found one too good after reclaiming the lead 250m out following a rails run behind the leader Valiant Elegance. He's well rated and relished a return to the Valley 1,200m. Smart Charade closed off nicely down the outside to finish a close third after settling last from a wide gate. He's a winner waiting to happen. Flying Photos ran on reasonably well to fill the frame after a one-off run behind midfield. Carry The Diamond ran on steadily without menacing near the inside after getting caught deep towards the rear until finding the fence 800m out. He's flashed potential in his six starts. Newcomer Happy Profit kept on all right despite being caught deep behind midfield the whole trip from a wide gate. It was a pleasing debut effort.
