Recap by phillip woo

Gold Velvet let down nicely to win going away following a midfield run to ring up a first win at his 12th start. He's a different horse following a stable change. Jolly Amber finished well from beyond midfield to grab second in deep stretch. He's shown life signs of late over this Valley trip but looks one who'd appreciate a longer trip. Dynamic Lions kept on gamely after settling box-seat to edge out Winningli for a placing. Like the winner, he too improved following a stable change and could be heading in the right direction now. Winningli peaked on his run 50m out after looming a good chance at the 200m following a prominent run. He's better on the dirt. Dutch Windmill got going late after settling second last from a wide gate. He's back in the right class and will be hard to beat if he can draw better. Excellence finished eased down when failing to lift following a patient ride third from the rear. It was a disappointing run despite a return to Class Five.

Racing Incident Report

Race One: (595) - DAEJEON HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1650Meters

GOAL FOR GOLD was withdrawn on 24.4.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SPICY DOUBLE (K Teetan).

Before being allowed to race again, GOAL FOR GOLD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

On arrival at the Start, K Teetan expressed concern regarding the action of SPICY DOUBLE.

SPICY DOUBLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was lame in its right hind leg and as such was not suitable to race.

Acting on this advice, SPICY DOUBLE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards.

Before being allowed to race again, SPICY DOUBLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

LITTLE FANTASY began only fairly and then despite being ridden along in the early stages failed to muster speed.

JOLLY AMBER began awkwardly.

From wide barriers, EXCELLENCE, DUTCH WINDMILL and EASTERN PROWESS were all steadied shortly after the start and shifted across behind runners.

When being shifted across behind EXCELLENCE approaching the winning post on the first occasion, DUTCH WINDMILL (N Callan) clipped the heels of that horse and blundered.

N Callan was shown the video of this incident and advised to exercise more judgement when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

When being steadied for some distance approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, DYNAMIC LIONS proved very difficult to settle and then when crossed by HAPPY CENTURY after the 1200 Metres got its head up when being checked away from the heels of that horse.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, HAPPY CENTURY was left racing wide and passing the 1400 Metres was ridden along to obtain the lead after the 1200 Metres.

Near the 950 Metres, EASTERN PROWESS was checked away from the heels of EXCELLENCE and in doing so shifted out.

EASTERN PROWESS then continued to prove difficult to settle for some distance.

Shortly after entering the Straight, TORNEY shifted out after being brushed by THE LEGEND.

Passing the 150 Metres, DUTCH WINDMILL was shifted out away from the heels of HAPPY CENTURY which was giving ground.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EXCELLENCE, Z Purton stated that after being placed in the barriers his mount kicked out at the back gates on a number of occasions and appeared somewhat agitated.

He said when DUTCH WINDMILL shifted across behind EXCELLENCE and clipped the heels of his mount approaching the winning post on the first occasion, EXCELLENCE commenced to travel keenly after becoming unbalanced.

He said when the pace of the race was good in the middle stages, he anticipated that this would suit EXCELLENCE.

He said passing the 500 Metres he shifted to the outside of JOLLY AMBER to commence to improve his position, however, despite being ridden along, EXCELLENCE did not quicken as he expected it would and he was not able to improve forward of JOLLY AMBER.

He added in the Straight EXCELLENCE lay in and did not finish off the race.

A veterinary inspection of EXCELLENCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

GOLD VELVET and JOLLY AMBER were sent for sampling.
