Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the United Nations to strip ‘criminal’ Russia of its veto power. Zelensky made the call at a speech before the UN Security Council meeting on September 20,2023. For the first time since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian leader was able to confront Russia directly at the UN meeting on Ukraine, which was attended by Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya. Zelensky said Russia’s veto power was preventing efforts to stop the war and urged the UN to act. He repeated Ukraine’s stance that Moscow’s veto power belonged to the former Soviet Union and not to President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
