One year on: Ukrainian war survivors struggle in the ruins of Mariupol

Living among the ruins, Mariupol residents such as Tatiana Bushlanova have struggled to cope with the devastating changes to their city since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly one year ago. Mariupol’s strategic location on the Sea of Azov made it a major target for Russia, which launched a so-called special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. According to Ukrainian officials, 95 per cent of the buildings in Mariupol have been destroyed by bombing that killed tens of thousands of people.
