Finland inducted into Nato as Russia warns of ‘countermeasures’

Finland officially became the 31st member of Nato on April 4, 2023, in a historic shift for the transatlantic security alliance that immediately drew an angry warning about “countermeasures” from the Kremlin. Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine starting in February 2022 upended Europe’s security landscape and prompted Finland and neighbouring Sweden to drop decades of military non-alignment and request Nato membership.
