Caught in the crossfire: Peru protesters killed in one of the country’s worst unrests

Peru has been embroiled in a major unrest since early December 2022, when former president Pedro Castillo was ousted and later detained. The presidential impeachment and arrest triggered street protests that have turned violent, with 22 killed in the crossfire as of December 27. One of the worst clashes was on December 15, in the southern city of Ayacucho.
