Panamanian authorities said they recaptured a woman who had escaped confinement from a Panama hotel where she and nearly 300 deportees from the United States were being held as they awaited repatriation to their countries on February 19, 2025. The migrants reportedly are from 10 mostly Asian countries, including Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Facing difficulty deporting migrants directly to their home countries, the US had arranged for Panama to serve as a stopover. Around 40 per cent of the deportees have reportedly said they would not voluntarily return to their homeland.
