First Russian troops reach Minsk to join Belarusian forces to defend against Ukraine

The first batch of Russian troops arrived in Belarus on October 15, 2022, to join forces with what Minsk says is a regional grouping to protect its border against Ukraine and the West. About 9,000 Russian soldiers are eventually expected to be stationed in the country, along Ukraine’s northern border.
