Rescuers race against time to save 10 miners trapped in Mexico coal mine

Rescuers have been racing against time to save 10 workers trapped in a coal mine in northern Mexico for more than a day. The workers hit a pocket of water during digging, flooding the mine they were in. They are stuck between two shafts about 200 feet (60 metres) deep that’s partially filled with water, officials said. Rescuers have been at the site in the state of Coahuila since the accident early on August 4, 2022. Nearly 98 per cent of Mexico’s coal comes from Coahuila, where worker safety has been a concern. In 2006, 65 miners died when a gas explosion triggered an avalanche at a mine in the state. Five years later, nine miners were killed in cave-ins at two mines in the region.
