A circular-shaped fire on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico resembling molten lava has been dubbed an "eye of fire" on social media. Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Pemex, said that a gas leak from an undersea pipeline sparked the blaze near one of its drilling platforms on July 2, 2021. The company said it brought the gas leak under control about five hours later. The cause of the fire is being investigated and it was unclear how much environmental damage the leak had caused. No injuries were reported in the incident that took place west of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.
