In historic first, Nato sends ‘Response Force’ to eastern Europe in reaction to Russia’s invasion

As a defensive measure in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been deploying troops and military gear to its eastern European allies. The Nato alliance requires that member states come to the aid of their allies in the event of an attack. It relies on the military forces of its member countries to carry out peacekeeping operations as it does not possess military forces of its own. Five hundred French troops have arrived in Romania to bolster Nato’s presence in eastern Europe while 3,800 US soldiers have flown to Germany to train with Nato allies. Another 1,000 UK troops are standing by to support Ukraine’s neighbours with the influx of refugees. It is the first time in its history that Nato has activated its ‘Response Force’.
