Ten-year-old Aalwan Aalwan was born in Syria just days after pro-democracy protests began in the country in March 2011. But instead of bringing out wider political freedom demonstrators hoped for, the “revolution” developed into a decade-long civil war. Over those 10 years, Aalwan has only known war and has been displaced more than five times. He lost his mother to a barrel bomb and saw classmates killed when munitions hit their school. The year four pupil now studies in a tent at a camp for displaced people along the Syria-Turkey border.
