Hong Kong’s neon heritage moves indoors as city tries to keep tradition glowing

Neon signs were once visible everywhere in Hong Kong’s streets, making the nighttime cityscape a sight to behold. But in recent decades, the government has ordered many of the signs to be taken down for safety reasons. The disappearance of neon has been compounded by advances in LED technology, which can also be used for signage at a lower cost. But some people in Hong Kong continue to hold traditional neon craftsmanship dear. Trendy restaurants and shops have been moving signs indoors and neon manufacturers are stepping up to supply the growing market. In this episode of #852 Stories, the Post speaks with one of the city’s few remaining neon artists to learn what drives him to continue his work.
