Biu Kee Mah-Jong forced to close after more than 50 years hand-crafting mahjong tiles in Hong Kong

Tucked away in Hong Kong’s Jordan neighbourhood in Kowloon, Biu Kee Mah-Jong is set to close after more than half a century in business. Third-generation mahjong tile craftsman Cheung Shun-king was told by his landlord on September 29 to move out before November 2, 2022. Once a booming industry for the popular parlour game throughout Southeast Asia, cheaper factory-made sets and rising material costs have made it increasingly difficult for traditional shops to remain in business. Cheung admits small stores like his are bound to disappear altogether.
