Hong Kong forms part of the backdrop for London-based director Rosanna Lee’s new documentary film that explores lion dancing. She examines how the traditional art form is intertwined with identity and belonging through the story of British-born Chinese Kelvin Chan. At age four, Chan was introduced to lion dancing at a martial arts school in London, by his father who originally learned the craft in Hong Kong. Lee and her team filmed segments for Heart of the Lion in the village of Ha Tsuen in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long district, where Chan’s father once lived and trained with the martial arts group Pun Bing Kwang Martial Arts & Athletic Association.
