Hong Kong has found a surprising solution to help ease a shortage of funeral urn spaces it has faced since the mid-2010s. The newly built Shan Sum columbarium will offer as many as 23,000 niches where families can lay the ashes of their loved ones to rest. The project is part of a decade-long effort by the city’s government to involve private companies in such facilities as a way of easing pressure on the funeral industry.
