Hong Kong and mainland China border reopening

Hong Kong-Shenzhen border reopening on hold again as both sides grapple with Covid-19 resurgence

Hopes that the Hong Kong-Shenzhen border would reopen have been dashed yet again as both sides battle resurgent waves of Covid-19 infections. Shenzhen has imposed tough restrictions after two people contracted the Delta variant on January 7, 2022. Since then, restrictions on movement have been implemented, and all 12.5 million of the city’s residents have undergone compulsory testing. In neighbouring Hong Kong,  the city’s leader rejected proposals from lawmakers to implement mainland-style measures as the city grapples with its fifth wave. Demand for testing is growing in the city as health officials announced that over 100,000 people are queuing daily for tests.
