Summer temperatures in Hong Kong typically reach over 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) with sky-high humidity. Practically every building has air conditioning and most residents are used to the comfort of coolness indoors. Lam Chiu-ying, a former head of the Hong Kong Observatory, became an internet icon after he claimed to have not turned on his home air conditioner for over 10 years. Often ridiculed online, Lam recently made use of his fame to partner up with a local rapper to promote environmental awareness.
