Liu Xiaobo

Candlelight march for Liu Xiaobo in Hong Kong

Thousands took to the streets of Hong Kong on Saturday night to pay tribute to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. Liu Xiaobo, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate imprisoned in China, died on July 13 after suffering from liver cancer.

His death came amid international criticism of Beijing for not letting him travel abroad to receive medical care.

Holding candles and white flowers, the protesters, mostly clad in black, marched from Central to the Beijing Liaison Office.

They chanted “End one-party rule” and “Free Liu Xia [Liu Xiaobo’s wife]” as they proceeded.

Police estimated there were about 2,500 people in the march, which was organised by the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China.
