The Hong Kong government has said it does not send anonymous letters offering rewards for information on fugitives overseas, dismissing Australia’s concerns that two opposition activists from the city had been targeted in that manner. Australia reportedly said anonymous letters had been sent offering a substantial reward for information on wanted Hong Kong activists Kevin Yam Kin-fung and Ted Hui Chi-fung, who fled to Australia. Beijing has also weighed in, accusing Canberra of “blatant interference in the rule of law in Hong Kong”. The response followed Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong accusing Hong Kong and Chinese authorities of interference.
