Scores trapped under rubble after China landslide, sparking evacuation of 500 in Yunnan province

Hundreds of villagers in China’s Yunnan province have been evacuated following a landslide that left over 40 people buried under rubble on January 22, 2024. The disaster happened in Liangshui village in Zhaotong city’s Zhenxiong county in the early hours of the morning. More than 300 rescuers were involved in the search operation under way in freezing conditions. The area’s terrain is known for its steep slopes and high mountains and state media reported that the village saw heavy snowfall the night before.
