Typhoon Shanshan slammed into Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu early on August 29, 2024. Packing gusts of up to 250km/h (157mph) that tore tiles off of rooftops, Japan’s most powerful typhoon of the year so far made landfall on the main southern island of Kyushu. Shanshan brought torrential rains that have caused flooding and landslide warnings. The coastal city of Miyazaki recorded at least 26 injuries, including some related to a tornado and others because of smashed windows. None of the injuries was reported to be life-threatening.
