Typhoon Kong-rey the largest storm to hit Taiwan in nearly 30 years

Typhoon Kong-rey caused havoc across Taiwan as the storm made landfall on the island’s southeastern Taitung county on October 31, 2024. Kong-rey brought strong winds that toppled street lights and trees as well as heavy rain, triggering landslides and flooding streets. One person has reportedly died and 73 people have been injured in storm-related accidents. Authorities have evacuated nearly 10,000 people to shelters. According to the Central Weather Administration, the radius of maximum sustained winds was measured at 320km (199 miles), making Kong-rey the largest storm to hit Taiwan since Typhoon Herb in 1996.
