Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on September 10, 2023, that there was more to Italy’s relationship with China than the Belt and Road Initiative. Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 summit, where Meloni met Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the Italian premier said a decision on whether to leave the initiative has yet to be made. Italy is the only G7 nation to sign up for the global trade and infrastructure plan modelled on the old Silk Road that linked ancient China and the West. But Italy is reportedly considering leaving the initiative it signed in 2004, and would instead seek to revitalise a strategic partnership agreement with China.
