Dozens of migrants killed in shipwreck off the coast of Italy’s Calabria region

At least 59 people, including 12 children, died when a boat carrying migrants to Europe crashed against rocks near Italy’s southern coast early on February 26, 2023, authorities said. The wooden sailing vessel, which was sailing from Turkey carrying people from Afghanistan, Iran and several other countries, sank in rough seas before dawn near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria.
