New hi-tech floor for Rome’s Colosseum will offer a ‘gladiator view’ by 2023

The ancient Roman Colosseum is once again going to have a floor by 2023, thanks to a new, hi-tech project announced by the culture ministry on May 2, 2021.

The project aims to create a flexible floor, which for the first time in about 200 years will offer visitors a sense of how the arena would have looked when gladiators fought to the death in front of crowds of spectators. In the early 19th century, architects had the floor removed to provide a clear view of the underground passageways in the Colosseum.
