The Chinese megacity of Chongqing has recently issued permits allowing fully driverless cars to operate as taxis. The move is the latest development in China’s services sector allowing what some call "robotaxis" to operate on its streets. In most other cities, rules require a safety officer to sit either in the driver's seat or the front passenger seat. But a robotaxi navigates without anyone near the steering wheel. Baidu plans to roll out its robotaxis commercially across China.
