Tokyo’s first female governor wins third term in bellwether test for ruling party

Tokyo’s first female governor, Yuriko Koike, was re-elected to a third four-year term on July 7, 2024. Koike has been in office since 2016 and has long been affiliated with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Her most prominent opponent was Renho Saito, a leading female opposition lawmaker. Koike’s policies have centred on tackling Japan’s low birth rate.
