Japan's Self Defence Forces (SDF) held mock tsunami evacuations on Yonaguni Island on November 12, 2023. Yonaguni Island is Japan’s westernmost island, located only 110km (68 miles) from Taiwan. Amid rising regional tensions, including between Taiwan and mainland China, Japanese officials said the drills were also helpful to prepare for any potential “Taiwan emergency”.
