A recent wave of robberies and break-ins in Japan has highlighted the country’s “dark gig” economy. Run by underground syndicates that hire would-be scammers to carry out yami baito or “dark part-time jobs”, the trend has raised alarm among authorities in Japan. A former yami baito recruit says many young people are drawn to the work because of its relative anonymity and likened the experience to being in a video game, where you get rewarded for completing a mission.
