Catholic devotees in the Philippines have marked Holy Week, the eight days leading up to Easter Sunday, with the return of several painful but long-standing traditions. Some brutally re-enacted the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by allowing themselves to be nailed to a cross by the hands and feet. Others performed self-flagellations in the streets with bamboo whips. Though these rituals are performed as penance, the Catholic Church has voiced disapproval over the extreme methods.
