A woman from the Philippines who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia arrived home in the early hours of December 18, 2024. Mary Jane Veloso returned following years of negotiations between the countries that saw her receive a last-minute reprieve from execution in 2015. A transfer agreement between Manila and Jakarta paved the way for Veloso to return home. She was seen embracing family members and acknowledging supporters at a women’s prison facility in Manila, where she was immediately sent after arriving from the capital’s airport. The mother of two was given special permission to have her family join her at the prison.
