Japan to repower nuclear plants amid soaring fuel prices, over a decade after Fukushima disaster

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on August 24, 2022, that the country will restart its idled nuclear power plants amid soaring fuel prices. The resumption of operations comes more than 10 years after a deadly nuclear disaster hit  Fukushima prefecture in 2011. The Japanese leader also said his administration would consider building next-generation nuclear power plants, with a target of making them operational in the 2030s.
