Wednesday’s eight-race card at Happy Valley shapes as another even night of racing at the city circuit, with the Class Two Shek O Handicap (1,650m) the highlight.

Jay Rooney is in the hot seat to provide an extended rundown of his selections.

Race 1 – Class Five Hoi Mei Handicap (1,000m)

Me Tsui Yu-sak produced Lucy In The Sky to win on the seven-day backup at Sha Tin and can do the same with Macanese Master, who drops back to his preferred trip after a solid fourth over 1,200m last week.

Macanese Master wins at the Valley in February.

Race 2 – Class Four Lido Handicap (1,200m) – first section

Bright Day finished last season strongly once switched to the Valley. The Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained galloper trialled nicely on the dirt ahead of his return and has, importantly, drawn well in gate three.

Race 3 – Class Four Big Wave Bay Handicap (1,800m)

In what looks a tough race on paper, Romantic Laos could have the edge in race fitness on his rivals as he backs up from a fast-finishing fifth over 1,650m last Wednesday.

He is yet to win at the course and distance of Wednesday night’s race but has gone close with three seconds.

Race 4 – Class Four Community Chest Cup (1,200m)

Live Wire broke through at the end of his debut campaign after showing potential and has scope for further improvement heading into his four-year-old season.

He won a recent Sha Tin trial stylishly and has drawn well in gate two with Zac Purton on board.

Race 5 – Class Four Lido Handicap (1,200m) – second section

Winning Money is a consistent type who rarely ran a bad race last term. He looked primed to strike fresh after bolting in by three lengths in his latest trial and can take advantage of barrier three.

Race 6 – Class Three Chung Hom Kok Handicap (1,650m)

Dazzling Fit has his first start at the Valley but has shown plenty in his career to date. He has trialled well and looks well placed at this level from the inside draw.

Race 7 – Class Three Repulse Bay Handicap (1,000m)

There is no shortage of speed engaged here and that should suit three-time course and distance winner Bunta Baby, who can swoop late under Purton.

Race 8 – Class Two Shek O Handicap (1,650m)

In what looms as a wide-open feature to close the card, Max Que can build on a close fourth behind Sing Dragon at Sha Tin first up and figure prominently.
