Nobel Medicine Prize awarded to US duo for ‘fundamentally important’ discovery of microRNA

The Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded on October 7, 2024, to US scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in how genes are regulated. Ambros, a professor of natural science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, performed the research that led to his share of the prize. Ruvkun’s research was done at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he is a professor of genetics. Ambros and Ruvkun voiced surprise and delight about their win.
