Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus has taken up a role as interim leader after a student-led uprising ended the 15-year rule of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The Nobel laureate appeared emotional and held back tears as he addressed the nation on August 8, 2024. Representatives of Hasina's Awami League party were not present as Yunus was sworn in as chief adviser, which is the equivalent to a prime minister. Hasina resigned and abruptly left the country on August 5, following weeks of violence that killed more than 300 people and injured thousands.
