Political tensions increased again in Bangladesh on October 22, 2024, as a student group called for the country’s figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin to leave his post over comments he made about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina implying he did not think she officially stepped down. Shahabuddin told a Bengali-language newspaper earlier in the week that he had not seen Hasina’s resignation letter as she fled to India in August amid a student-led uprising.
