The Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Philippine journalist Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov of Russia on October 8, 2021. Ressa is a prominent journalist and leading critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Her online news platform, Rappler, challenged the Duterte government’s claims and policies, including on extrajudicial killings and human rights violations from Duterte’s war on drugs. The Nobel Committee said Ressa was awarded the peace prize for her efforts “to safeguard freedom of expression” in her country.
