Chinese-American scholar Wang Shujun was convicted in the United States on August 6, 2024, on charges of using his reputation as a pro-democracy activist to gather information on dissidents and feeding it to the Chinese government. Wang, a co-founder of a pro-democracy group based in New York, faces up to 25 years in prison. Prosecutors said the naturalised US citizen lived a double life for over a decade at the behest of China’s main intelligence agency, the Ministry of State Security. Wang was charged along with four Chinese officials, who remain at large. China’s Foreign Ministry told AP that it was unaware of the case, but that Beijing opposed the “blatant prosecution” of its officials.
