The first US national security adviser to travel to China in eight years stressed the importance of “intense diplomacy” with Beijing as he capped his visit by meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on August 29, 2024. Jake Sullivan said the bilateral relationship would remain competitive, but the two major powers must manage ties responsibly. Sullivan also told Xi that US President Joe Biden was interested in engaging again “in the coming weeks”.
