The Chinese-built Chancay megaport in Peru is set to become one of the main trade routes between South America and Asia. A representative from the company building it, Cosco Shipping, called it the “gateway to Asia” in a press conference on August 22, 2023. Located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Lima, construc tion began in 2011 and a first stage is expected to conclude at the end of 2024 with entry allowed into four berths. The project has cost an estimated US$1.3 billion.
