At least 18 people were killed in a police operation targeting criminals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 21, 2022. Heavily armed police officers raided favelas in northern Rio to arrest alleged gang members who were suspected of robbing banks and stealing cars. The operation left 16 gang members, a police officer and a bystander dead. Police raids in the South American country have become increasingly lethal. A police operation in May killed 22 people, while another raid in 2021 left 28 people dead.
