Clandestine Carnival gatherings held after coronavirus pandemic cancels Brazil’s largest party

Brazil’s streets are normally full of colourful festivities, dancing and huge crowds in the run-up to Ash Wednesday as the country celebrates Carnival. It marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days before Easter. This year, the festival fell on February 12-17, but the coronavirus pandemic meant that celebrations were cancelled. But small groups risked breaking the rules and held clandestine parties. Brazil has the second highest number of Covid-related deaths in the world.
