Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi died during a raid by US special forces on February 3, 2022, on his hideaway in a small Syrian village. First responders say that 13 people were killed during the predawn raid, including several women and children. US officials say al-Qurayshi killed members of his own family when he detonated an explosive during the battle. Another woman and a child were killed during a firefight between an Isis lieutenant and US forces. Al-Qurayshi became the head of the militant group after its former leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, died during a similar raid by US forces in 2019.
