Iraqi city of Mosul struggles to rise from wartime ashes left by Islamic State’s reign of terror

Reconstruction has been under way in Mosul since the city in northern Iraq was reduced to rubble in a battle to free it from the control of Islamic State, also known as Isis. Isis militants controlled Mosul from June 2014 until July 2017 when they were defeated and driven from the city. In 2018, The UN’s heritage body Unesco started working with the European Union on projects to restore damaged buildings and monuments. Eight years after the Isis takeover, Mosul's Old City is gradually coming back to life.
