Taiwan’s antique jade industry used to be the go-to place for Chinese heritage hunters, taking in nearly US$16 million a year. But rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait have shut out mainland Chinese visitors, who have been the industry’s biggest buyers. The island’s jade market further declined to a quarter of previous levels amid a weak post-Covid economic recovery that has made buyers more cautious about big spending.
