Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te has vowed to boost the island’s defences and improve its economic resilience amid serious challenge from the opposition-controlled legislature in his New Year’s Day speech on January 1, 2024. His remarks followed an address by Chinese President Xi Jinping on New Year’s Eve that included a message for Taiwan. In the televised speech, Xi said that “no one can ever stop China’s reunification – a trend of the times”. In his address, Lai urged Taiwanese to gather “every bit of strength” to improve the island’s defences and “build the capacity to respond to large-scale disasters and deter threats and invasions”.
