Chinese President Xi Jinping used his annual National Day address on September 30, 2024, to warn “separatists” on Taiwan and emphasise Beijing’s backing for Hong Kong and Macau. Xi described Taiwan as “China’s sacred territory” and said people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are “connected by blood”. Xi delivered his speech at an official event in Beijing on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic on October 1.
